Swashbuckler SCAG / XGtE. The Rogue's biggest challenge is applying Sneak Attack reliably. While that's relatively easy in 5e, there are still times when you won't manage to Sneak Attack. The Swashbuckler all but eliminates these times, making the Rogue an even more reliable source of damage.

One of my players is a Swashbuckler Rogue, and we debated if he could use the Sneak Attack on every attack with the Rakish Audacity ability (from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide):. In addition, you don't need advantage on your attack roll to use your Sneak Attack if no creature other than your target is within 5 feet of you.
Given that the swashbuckler is a rogue archetype, no matter how heroic you intend your PC to be, I think it's worth giving your swashbuckler a story that explains why they are so adept at slinking into the shadows, picking locks and conning wealthy widow(er)s into signing off their heirlooms and estates into your possession.Jun 12, 2015 · Here, I define a swashbuckler as a martial character who relies on speed, precision, and agility (read: Dexterity) to defeat enemies rather than raw physical power (read: Strength). Granted, it is possible to base a swashbuckler in the rogue class, but the rogue comes with baggage that doesn’t necessarily fit a primarily martial character type.

The Swashbuckler capstone ability also gives them a free do-over with advantage per short rest on a missed attack to turn the tides of any fight.
